SAM COREN – TOOLS TO BUILD WORLDS
10 Days, Sep 2-13
WHO Sam Coren
WHAT This two-week creative workshop/development will comprise of teaching tools to the participants to control their narrative theatrically and create innovative, complex textures in movement material. Then using these tools to work on bringing an idea to life in a short creation, culminating in a sharing. Sam’s practice mixes theatrical ideas from mask, mime and clowning with his dance experience to create works that are physically complex, darkly humoured and ever so occasionally insightful.
Most importantly I hope the participants leave the process with a sense of enjoyment, if we learn a little something about movement, performance, creation, confidence and comedy along the way, then that’s a bonus.
Born in South London, Sam’s introduction to dance began with community classes at an early age. He went on to train at London Contemporary Dance School obtaining BA (Hons) & MA degrees before embarking on a multi-award winning career across stage and screen performing, teaching and choreographing.
Collaborating with some of the worlds seminal artists including Jasmin Vardimon, Clod Ensemble, The Farm, Hofesh Shechter Company, Chemical Brothers, FKA Twigs, Jon Hopkins amongst others. Sams works have been commissioned internationally for various festivals and companies, most recently UK, Australia, Spain, Canada and Singapore. His idiosyncratic style mixes Contemporary dance with clowning, mask and mime work resulting in an often darkly humoured, satirical and absurd reflection on the trials and tribulations of the human experience. Sam has been working between Australia and Europe since moving to Aus in 2021.
