Riverside Theatres Presents New Zealand Dance Company

He toa taumata rau / Courage has many resting places (Maori Proverb)

An iconic symbol of early 20th Century community, Rotunda brings to life the world of the band rotunda – a place where memories of love and loss were often rekindled.

Enter a rousing 24 piece live brass band performing a range of heartfelt hymns and stunning new brass works. Enter eight contemporary dancers from the New Zealand Dance Company with an energy that is raw and inspiring. They collide beautifully in Rotunda, a vivid piece of dance theatre that marks the centenary of New Zealand and Australia’s involvement in the First World War.

This poignant and moving work is a living memorial to the thousands of innocent young Australian and New Zealander men who gave their lives or were left traumatised by the often ill-planned battles of The Great War and the women who set about running the country with aching hearts and dread that their men might not return.

Presented by arrangement with Arts Projects Australia with support from Creative New Zealand’s Touring Australia Initiative.

“…a troupe of terrific dancers, as interesting as they are talented…another fierce and fabulous strike for professional and profound contemporary dance in New Zealand.” The New Zealand Herald
