Choreographic Workshop

FORM Dance Projects welcomes the return of its annual Choreographic Workshop in 2022 in partnership with Sydney Dance Company.

This popular program provides dance students with the unique opportunity to develop their choreographic skills under the guidance of outstanding industry professionals.

Mentored by Sydney Dance Company Teaching Artists, the practical workshop shares choreographic tools and techniques used by the Company’s Artistic Director Rafael Bonachela’s creative process.

In this immersive one-day workshop, students are challenged to think innovatively, disrupt familiar patterns of moving, generate interesting material, and develop their confidence and creativity in composition. The workshop program also offers insights into Rafael Bonachela’s creative process through viewing and discussing excerpts of Sydney Dance Company work with the Teaching Artists.

Sydney Dance Company Teaching Artists will guide students through tasks similar to those used in the development of ab [intra], exploring stimulus and incorporating choreographic elements.

The Choreographic Workshop is particularly valuable for HSC dance students and students who would like to participate in Sharp Short Dance later in the year.

ABOUT  ab [intra]
Exploring our primal instincts, our impulses and our visceral responses, ab [intra] is a journey through the intensity of human existence that will command your attention. The music fuses lush cello with ambient electronica and the exquisite dancers occupy a visually arresting ethereal world.

Latin for ‘from within’, ab [intra] was choregraphed by Rafael Bonachela in 2018. The concept of the idea ‘from within’ is a result of the choreographic process where all the inspiration was derived from the Company dancers themselves as opposed to external stimulus such as text, images, music or choreographic research.

“The choreographic process and use of compositional tools was wonderful” – Evangeline Doust Penrith Anglican College, Dance teacher

“ I found that working with others was interesting as it allowed me to move out of my comfort zone” (Yr9, Bossley Park HS)

“The activities used to generate movement were great and really assisted the students in understanding how to choreograph in a more interesting way” Sarah Minol Wyndhan College Dance Teacher
