Scary Piece of Work
11 – 13 June 2026, Sydney Opera House Drama Studio
Fear is everywhere
Choreographer Martin del Amo takes on one of our most primal emotions: fear. The result is a strange, darkly funny solo performance blending intimate storytelling and compelling movement sequences. Spotlights stalk the darkness. Sound erupts without warning. Even his own voice begins to distort.
At a time of global uncertainty and instability, fear feels more present than ever. Scary Piece of Work taps into that mood while gently poking fun at it, offering a witty, unsettling look at how we live with the things that scare us most. When does fear protect? When does it paralyse? When does it take hold and haunt us?
As Martin navigates ever-shifting terrain, the stage itself seems to conspire against him, building into a vivid fever dream – Fred Astaire meets Nosferatu at Eurovision, with Hitchcock as MC.
With chilling voice-wizardry by Marcus Whale, horror-infused sound design by Gail Priest and noir-inspired lighting by Frankie Clarke, the performance slips between humour, unease and unbridled imagination.
Step into a world where fear is never what it seems. Enter at your own peril…
